Xero AI in Google Gemini Review (2026): What It Does, What It Costs & the Human Check

On 14 October 2026 Xero put live financial data inside Google Gemini and became, in its own words, the first financial management platform with a connected app for Gemini — powered by its agentic platform JAX. Gemini can read, chart and draft; nothing that changes your books happens without you confirming it.

⚡ TL;DR — is it useful, and do you pay more for it?

Useful, yes — with one caveat that decides everything. If you already run Xero and you live in Gemini, this is a real upgrade: you can ask for a client's profit and loss, their aged receivables or their cash position and get the answer charted, from live Xero data, without opening Xero or exporting a report. Xero names five capability areas — financial health and performance, sales and receivables, purchases and payables, interactive visual reports, and organisation and contacts — and for reading and reporting it is the most polished thing in bookkeeping AI right now. The caveat is that AI does not get to touch the ledger on its own. Xero states plainly that any operation which modifies financial data, such as issuing an invoice or sending a payment reminder, requires explicit user confirmation in Xero's connected app before execution — Xero calls this Accountable Intelligence. That is a selling point for anyone who has been arguing with a platform that categorises their bank feed whether they like it or not, and a disappointment for anyone who wanted the AI to just get on with it. On price: the connected app is not a separate subscription you buy, and Xero's own JAX pages say there is currently no additional charge to Xero subscribers for the JAX chat experience — but you are paying for Xero, and Xero's price went up. The US rise landed on 1 October 2026 (Early ~$27, Growing ~$59, Established ~$97 a month, roughly +7–8%), the USD-billed international plans rise on 1 November 2026 (Starter to ~$32, Standard to ~$54, Premium to ~$82), and the UK moved on 1 September 2026. Two more things Xero's announcement does not say out loud, and Google's own requirements table does: the app needs a personal Google account, age 18+, English only — so a work or school Google account cannot add it through the consumer Gemini app — and the scheduled tasks toggle is "coming soon" on eligible plans Xero has not yet named. And no, Xero does not publish an independent accuracy rate. Neither does Intuit.

What Xero × Gemini Actually Is

It is a connected app inside Gemini, not a new Xero product. On 14 October 2026 — with the Business Wire release datelined San Mateo on 13 October — Xero announced an integration that brings live Xero financial data into Gemini conversations. Xero says it is the first financial management platform to launch a connected app for Gemini, and the app is powered by Xero's agentic platform, JAX (Just Ask Xero), with real-time data flowing into Gemini under what Xero describes as secure, continuous synchronisation with Xero.

Practically, that means you connect Xero to Gemini once through Gemini's Connected Apps settings, and from then on you can ask questions in the conversation you were already having. The answers are grounded in your ledger, not in a model's memory, which is the difference between an assistant that can tell you a plausible number and one that can tell you your number.

Diya Jolly, Xero's President of Product & Technology, framed it as removing a switch of applications rather than as automation:

"Connecting Xero financial data into Gemini conversations helps small businesses and their accountants and bookkeepers instantly check their financial position, track cash flow and manage invoices and bills, all without breaking their workflow."

And the accountant's-eye version of the same claim, from Anurag Agrawal, Founder and Chief Global Analyst at Techaisle, in Xero's release:

"Accountants and bookkeepers can ask Gemini for a client's profit and loss, aged receivables, or cash position and get the answer, charted, from live Xero data. The time that previously went into assembling those reports can go into helping clients understand what the numbers mean and what to do next."

Two structural details matter more than the launch language. First, Xero is also adding the ability for accountants and bookkeepers to switch between their practice's client organisations while working across all of these integrations — Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude, Claude for Small Business and Microsoft 365. That is the feature that makes this a practice tool rather than a novelty, because a firm's whole problem is that it works across twenty files at once. Second, the stack Xero is building here is not new: JAX has been shipping for over a year, with automatic bank reconciliation, smart document capture, an agent builder and a mid-market tier all announced through 2026. Gemini is a new front end onto that platform, not a new platform.

The limits Xero did not put in the headline

Google, not Xero, publishes the rules of the road for connected apps, and the entry for Xero is specific. Google's Connected Apps requirements table lists Xero with a personal Google account only, ages 18 and over, all countries and territories where Gemini Apps and Xero are supported, and English only, on the Gemini web app, the Gemini mobile app and the Gemini app for Windows, supported in Chats and Tasks — and it names no required Google AI subscription. Read that carefully, because two of those lines are real constraints rather than legal boilerplate:

🧭 The line worth reading twice. Xero's announcement does not mention pricing, does not name which plans are "eligible" for tasks, and does not state regional availability beyond what Google's table says. That is not malice — launch releases rarely carry the fine print — but it means the honest answer to "will this work for me?" is check your account type, country and language in Google's requirements table and your plan on xero.com, because the announcement itself will not tell you.

What You Can Ask: The Five Capability Areas

These are Xero's own five categories, quoted from the release. They are all read-and-report capabilities, which is the pattern to notice: Xero has shipped the question-answering half first.

1

Financial health & performance

The one most small business owners will use first

2

Sales & receivables

Chasing the money you are owed

3

Purchases & payables

The supplier side, which most AI bookkeeping tools ignore

4

Interactive visual reports

The feature that makes the integration feel different from a chat window

5

Organisation & contacts

The unglamorous category that saves the most minutes

And the thing that is not here yet: Gemini Tasks

Xero says customers on eligible plans will soon be able to work within the tasks toggle in the Gemini app, using live Xero data to create time-based schedules and workflows for routine work. The two examples Xero gives are worth quoting because they describe an actual working day rather than a demo: combining Xero and Gmail to prepare follow-ups for overdue invoices, and a recurring schedule for a daily summary of key financial information, such as pending bills and current cash position. Google's requirements table already lists Xero as supported in Tasks, so the plumbing is in place. What is missing is the answer to the only question a buyer has: which plans are eligible? Xero has not said. Treat the tasks toggle as announced, not available.

Human in the Loop: The Human Check Is the Story

This is the part of the review that matters most, and it is a strength rather than a caveat. Xero states it in the release, in plain language, and it is the clearest control statement any major bookkeeping platform has published this year:

To ensure human oversight, any operation that modifies financial data, such as issuing an invoice or sending a payment reminder, requires explicit user confirmation in Xero's connected app in Google Gemini before execution. The review step and final judgement stay with the accountant or bookkeeper and the business owner, grounded in Xero's commitment to Accountable Intelligence where AI handles the heavy lifting and surfaces insights, keeping humans firmly at the helm.

Read what that actually buys you. Gemini can read your books, summarise them, chart them, draft an invoice summary and prepare a follow-up. It cannot send the reminder, issue the invoice or post the entry on its own authority. The write happens inside Xero's connected app, with a confirmation step in front of it. For a business owner who has ever watched an AI tool "helpfully" categorise a payment to the wrong account, that is the difference between an assistant and a liability.

The same philosophy runs through Xero's own AI, and Xero is unusually explicit about it on its JAX pages:

The data terms are stated rather than implied, which is itself worth noting. Xero says financial information shared between platforms is used solely for the user's session and Xero data is not used to train Google Gemini models, in line with Xero's responsible data use commitments. Xero's JAX help pages go further: the large language models are supplied by third parties including AWS, Microsoft Azure, GCP and OpenAI, all disclosed and vetted as sub-processors, the data you enter is not used to train the LLMs and is not retained for that purpose, and Xero commits to telling customers in plain language how customer data is used and being transparent about where AI systems appear in its products. On the platform side, Xero holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification, produces SOC 2 reports from independent audits, complies with PCI DSS v4.0 SAQ A, requires multi-factor authentication, encrypts data in transit and at rest, and runs a vulnerability disclosure programme. That is more than most AI bookkeeping features ship with, and none of it is a substitute for reading the terms yourself at the scale your business needs.

⚠ Where the human-in-the-loop story gets uncomfortable. If a human must approve every write, then the accuracy of the books still depends on the human — and the AI's job is to make that review feel unnecessary. Xero's own guide on AI in accounting, published on its own site, cites hallucination rates in finance-related AI queries of up to 41% and states that every AI-generated number needs a human check before you act on it. Xero's stated goal for JAX automation is to auto-reconcile more than 80% of bank statement lines in real time — that is a goal, published as a goal, not a measured result, and Xero's help centre documents how to fix a bank line that JAX reconciled incorrectly, which is a more useful disclosure than an accuracy claim. The only third-party testing we could find, a bookkeeping firm that ran JAX auto-reconciliation across client files for up to ten weeks in 2026, reported it correctly handling in the region of 60–67% of transactions on suitable files with no errors, and failing more often on complex files — intercompany transfers coded to the wrong account, repeating subscriptions coded correctly one month and incorrectly the next, and timing conflicts with document capture. That does not make the feature bad; it makes the "set and forget" pitch false. You are the final check, and the plan has to include you actually doing it.

Pricing: What It Costs

Three separate questions hide in "what does this cost", and the answers are different. Take them in order, because the easiest one to get wrong is the first.

1. The Gemini connected app itself

No separately published price, on either side. Xero's announcement does not mention pricing and does not present the Gemini integration as a paid add-on. Xero's JAX help pages state that there is currently no additional charge to Xero subscribers for the JAX chat experience, while reserving the right to change the terms and conditions of using JAX, including the pricing. Google's Connected Apps requirements table lists account type, age, location and language for the Xero app and does not name a required Google AI subscription — consistent with the rest of that table, where trade coverage that read it in August 2026 found no connected app carrying a subscription requirement.

What that means in practice: you are not being sold an AI tier. You are being told that the AI is part of Xero now, and that Xero's price is what Xero's price is. Which brings us to the part that shows up on your invoice.

2. Xero's 2026 price rises — before the announcement, not because of it

The US increase took effect 1 October 2026, twelve days before the Gemini announcement, for new and existing US subscribers, after Xero notified customers and partners in late July. Xero billed in US dollars outside the United States is on a second change from 1 November 2026, and the UK moved on 1 September 2026.

Market and planPreviousCurrent / from the effective dateChangeEffective

UK — Grow£37/mo£39/mo+£21 Sept 2026
UK — Comprehensive£50/mo£55/mo+£51 Sept 2026
UK — Ultimate£65/mo£70/mo+£51 Sept 2026

Three details decide your real bill. Plan names differ by country, so the "Starter / Standard / Premium" line-up readers search for is the USD-billed international one, while the US sells Early / Growing / Established and the UK renamed its plans to Simple / Ignite / Grow / Comprehensive / Ultimate in 2024 (Starter, Standard and Premium are no longer sold there). The multi-organisation discount is being removed in the US from 1 October 2026, internationally from 1 November 2026 and in the UK from 1 September 2026 — so a practice carrying several files under one account loses a discount at the same moment as it pays more per file, and existing promo codes ride out to their own expiry rather than being cancelled. And annualised, the US Established rise is ~$84 per organisation per year, which is nothing for one file and multiplied by every file for a firm.

All figures are indicative list prices in each currency, excluding tax and optional add-ons, re-checked on xero.com in October 2026. Promotional discounts are common (the US pricing page has run 80% off for the first three months for new customers, and the UK page up to 90% off for six months). Xero's stated reason for the increases is continued investment in the product and a wave of new capabilities; Xero has not published a causal link between any specific AI feature and the increase. Confirm current numbers on xero.com before you subscribe or renew.

3. The plan gate nobody mentions in the announcement

The Gemini connected app is not plan-gated in anything Xero or Google has published. JAX automation is. Xero's own product pages state that you need the Growing plan or above in the US to use JAX automation such as automatic bank reconciliation, and in the UK the Grow, Comprehensive and Ultimate plans include it, with Ignite able to add it as a paid AI Automate add-on. JAX chat, by contrast, is described by Xero as available to all Xero subscribers and users at no additional charge. The practical consequence is arithmetic: if the feature you actually want is the AI doing the reconciliation rather than the AI answering questions about it, the plan you need is the middle one — ~$59/month in the US, £39 in the UK — not the entry plan. And note the honest reading of the cost story overall: you are not paying extra for AI, you are paying a higher subscription for a platform that now includes AI, whether or not you use it. That is a materially better deal than Intuit's, where the August 2026 increases of ~13%, ~22% and ~24% landed on tiers whose AI cannot be switched off — but it is not free, and the "no additional charge" line is a current position that Xero has explicitly reserved the right to change.

Xero vs Intuit: Two Opposite Bets on Control

The comparison that matters is not feature-by-feature, because both platforms now have capable assistants grounded in the customer's own data. It is a difference of philosophy, and it shows up in the one place a buyer should care about: what happens if you don't want it.

Xero's bet: the AI waits to be asked, and the human signs off the write. JAX does nothing until you open it; access follows existing permissions; automatic bank reconciliation is opt-in per bank account; anything that changes financial data needs explicit confirmation in the connected app; and the data terms state session-only use and no training on Google's models. The trade is that you get back what you put in — an owner who never opens JAX gets nothing from it.

Intuit's bet: the AI is part of the platform and arrives with the plan. Eight named agents run inside QuickBooks, Intuit's own help article says there is currently not a way to turn off AI features individually, and the tiers that absorbed the biggest increases are the ones carrying the heaviest AI. The trade is the mirror image: customers who would never have configured an agent get hours saved anyway.

QuestionXero with Google Gemini (JAX)Intuit Intelligence (QuickBooks)
When does the AI act?Only when you open JAX and ask, plus automatic bank reconciliation where you have enabled it per bank accountContinuously in the background — Accounting AI categorises and matches, Payments AI proposes reminders, bank feeds move to AI automatically
Can you switch it off?Yes, granularly: leave JAX unopened, adjust user roles, and opt in or out of automation per bank account. There is nothing global to disable because nothing global is imposedNot individually — Intuit states this in its own help article. Only the Accounting agent (via reverting the bank page) and the Payroll agent can be turned off
Who approves a write? You do, explicitly. Any operation modifying financial data, such as issuing an invoice or sending a payment reminder, requires confirmation in Xero's connected app before execution (Accountable Intelligence)Chat acts after user confirmation, and AI recommendations are left for a human to review and approve, but the default-on agents operate without a per-action prompt
What does the Gemini app require?Personal Google account only, 18+, English only, on Gemini web, mobile and Windows; tasks reserved for unnamed "eligible plans"Depends on QuickBooks plan and region; the international capabilities rolled out in beta and some features are tier-restricted
Is your data used to train the models? No — Xero states data is used solely for the user's session and Xero data is not used to train Google Gemini models; JAX pages say user data is not retained to train the LLMsIntuit publishes its own AI data commitments; read them against your requirements rather than assuming equivalence
What did the AI cost you?No additional charge stated for JAX chat, but the subscription rose ~7–8% in the US on 1 October 2026 and rises again internationally on 1 November 2026; JAX automation sits on Growing/Grow and aboveBundled, and the AI-heavy tiers rose ~13%, ~22% and ~24% for renewals on or after 1 August 2026, with Intuit's update page tying the change to AI capability
Independent accuracy rate publishedNo. Xero publishes a goal (>80% of statement lines auto-reconciled in real time) and a fix path for wrong reconciliationsNo
Best forBusinesses and accountants who want to choose when AI touches the ledger, and who value being the one who approves the writeBusinesses that want automation delivered by default and are comfortable governing it through permissions and workflow

There is a version of this comparison in which Intuit looks better, and an honest review has to state it: default-on automation is what produces measurable hours saved for the customers who would never have switched it on. Xero's approach protects the cautious and rewards the curious; it does not do the work for the indifferent. Which side of that you are on is a better predictor of which platform suits you than any feature list. Our Intuit Intelligence review and our Xero review cover the platforms behind the AI in detail.

Pros & Cons

✅ Pros

  • Live data, not model recall. Answers come from the current ledger under continuous synchronisation with Xero, which is the difference between a plausible number and your number
  • The human check is designed in, not bolted on. Any operation that modifies financial data — issuing an invoice, sending a payment reminder — requires explicit confirmation in Xero's connected app before execution. Xero calls it Accountable Intelligence, and it is the clearest control statement in this market
  • Charts inside the conversation. Net profit/loss graphs and aged receivables distributions drawn in the chat change what a client call looks like, and compete with reporting add-ons rather than with the ledger
  • Payables get attention. Outstanding payables, overdue bills and vendor payment requirements — the supplier side most AI bookkeeping features ignore
  • The practice feature is the real one. Accountants and bookkeepers can switch between client organisations across all of Xero's AI integrations, which turns twenty file opens into one conversation
  • No separate AI subscription published. Xero's JAX pages state there is currently no additional charge to subscribers for the JAX chat experience, and Google's requirements table names no required Google AI plan
  • Opt-out is genuinely granular. Leave JAX unopened, adjust roles and permissions, and enable or disable automatic bank reconciliation per bank account — nothing global is imposed to begin with
  • Data terms are stated. Session-only use, no training of Google's models, LLM providers disclosed and vetted as sub-processors, and user data not retained to train them
  • Verification story rather than an accuracy slogan. The Reconciled page shows the method behind every automated reconciliation — Rule, Match, Memory or Prediction — and you can filter and challenge them
  • Security posture is auditable. ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification, SOC 2 reports from independent audits, PCI DSS v4.0 SAQ A, mandatory MFA, encryption in transit and at rest, and a vulnerability disclosure programme
  • One platform, many front ends. Microsoft 365, Claude, Claude for Small Business, ChatGPT and now Gemini — you are not locked into one AI vendor's app
  • Xero's own AI guidance is blunt. Xero publishes a guide that cites hallucination rates in finance AI queries of up to 41% and says every AI number needs a human check. A vendor that says that about its own category is more useful than one that quotes a hit rate

❌ Cons

  • The AI cannot act without you. Xero's confirmation requirement is the right design and it is also the limit: this is an assistant, not an autonomous bookkeeper. If you wanted the coding done while you were away, this is not it
  • Personal Google account only. Google's requirements table excludes work and school Google Workspace accounts from adding the app through the consumer Gemini app; teams need Gemini Enterprise and an administrator
  • English only, 18 and over — a hard stop for many staff and markets, and not mentioned in Xero's announcement
  • Tasks is "coming soon" on "eligible plans" Xero has not named. Google lists Tasks as supported; Xero lists it as forthcoming. You cannot budget around an unannounced plan gate
  • No regional availability statement from Xero. Trade coverage noted the announcement did not detail pricing, eligible plans or whether the app would be offered in particular markets. Google's table is the only source of scope
  • The connected app is brand new and unproven. First platform to ship one means first platform to find out what an agentic wrapper around a ledger does at scale
  • No independent accuracy rate from Xero, and the one number the company does state — auto-reconciling more than 80% of statement lines in real time — is published as a goal, not a measured result
  • Third-party practice testing is less flattering than the pitch. Roughly 60–67% of transactions correctly handled on suitable files, with errors on complex ones: wrong-account intercompany transfers, subscriptions coded correctly one month and wrongly the next, and document-capture timing conflicts
  • The price rise landed before the announcement. US plans rose up to ~8% on 1 October 2026, twelve days earlier, and the USD-billed international plans rise again on 1 November 2026 — so the "free AI" arrives in the same bill as a bigger subscription
  • JAX automation is plan-gated at Growing/Grow and above, so the entry plan buys you the chat, not the reconciliation. In the UK, Simple and Ignite need a paid AI Automate add-on
  • The multi-organisation discount is being removed across the US, international and UK markets, which hits practices hardest at exactly the moment the AI story is aimed at them
  • "No additional charge" has an escape hatch. Xero states it reserves the right to change the terms and conditions of using JAX, including the pricing — so today's free tier is a position, not a contract
  • Every reported figure is a view, not a filing. A chart drawn in a chat is not an audited report, and a conversational P&L built on a messy ledger is confidently wrong rather than visibly broken

5 Best Alternatives in 2026

The alternatives below split along the two objections this review keeps landing on. If your objection is control, Xero is already the answer and the first entry below is its opposite. If your objection is cost after two rounds of increases, the middle entries come in cheaper with AI bundled rather than priced in — and one of them is free.

Zoho Books (Zia) Free under about ~$50K revenue; paid from about ~$20/month (~$15 billed annually) per organisation Effectively yes — Zia is a feature inside the product rather than an automation imposed on the bank feed Yes for routine actions such as collecting reminders and categorising statements, within the product The cheapest credible AI-assisted bookkeeping, especially for a business small enough to stay on the free plan
Dext AI Assist Core guidance free to all Dext users; custom guidance about ~$7 per client/month on the launch offer to 31 Oct 2026, published post-offer ~$10, on top of Dext Business or practice plans Yes — and it is the design. Every suggestion is review, refine, reject or auto-apply, with reasoning attached and every action auditable Only what you approve, item by item Accounting practices that want AI on document capture with a mandatory human decision on every item
FreshBooks ~$23/month, Plus ~$43, Premium ~$70 — priced by billable clients Largely moot: no AI agent layer runs over the ledger, and reminders are a setting rather than an agent Automated invoicing and reminders, not ledger decisions Service businesses and freelancers where invoicing, estimates and getting paid faster are the point
Wave Accounting $0 free accounting and invoicing, unlimited; Pro about ~$25/month (US/Canada) for bank feeds Yes trivially — there is no AI to switch off No Zero software cost with no AI layer and a real double-entry ledger underneath

All prices are indicative figures for October 2026 drawn from vendor pricing pages, product and help pages, official price-change notices and the vendors' own launch announcements, and they vary by region, plan, user or organisation count, billing currency, promotional period and billing channel. Xero's price changes take effect at different dates in different markets (1 September 2026 in the UK, 1 October 2026 in the US, 1 November 2026 for USD-billed international plans). Taxes are excluded. Confirm on each vendor's official site before subscribing or renewing.

Which One Should You Choose?

When the Gemini integration is clearly worth it

Plenty of 2026 commentary treats every AI announcement as a tax on the customer. For this one that is too simple, because there are three situations where the integration earns its keep immediately:

Conversely, if you are a one-person business whose real problem is that you cannot get paid, a firm that needs the automation to run without human review, or anyone whose objection to AI is the price it is bundled into — offset the promise against the bill, look at Zoho Books, FreshBooks or Wave, and make the decision before the next invoice rather than after it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Xero connected app for Google Gemini?

The Xero connected app for Google Gemini is an integration announced on 14 October 2026 that places live Xero financial data inside a Gemini conversation. Xero says it is the first financial management platform to launch a connected app for Gemini, and the app is powered by Xero's own agentic platform JAX. You connect Xero to Gemini once, then ask questions in plain English and get answers built from your own books rather than from the model's memory: a profit and loss statement, who is overdue, what is still unpaid to suppliers, where cash sits, and charts such as a net profit and loss graph or an aged receivables distribution drawn inside the chat. Xero groups the capabilities into five areas: financial health and performance, sales and receivables, purchases and payables, interactive visual reports, and organisation and contacts. A tasks toggle that can schedule routine work, such as a daily summary of pending bills and current cash position or pairing Xero with Gmail to prepare follow-ups for overdue invoices, is announced as coming soon for customers on eligible plans, and Xero has not said which plans those are. The connected app is not a separate subscription you buy from Xero; you need a Xero organisation and a Google account, and you connect it through Gemini's Connected Apps settings.

Do I need a paid Gemini plan to use the Xero connected app?

Not as far as either company publishes. Google maintains a Connected Apps requirements table that lists, for every app, the account type, age, locations, languages and the required Google AI subscription if any, and the Xero entry names a personal Google account, ages 18 and over, all countries and territories where Gemini Apps and Xero are supported, and English only, without naming a paid Google AI plan. Trade coverage that read the same table in August 2026 found no connected app carrying a subscription requirement at all. The real gates are different from a paywall. Google's table says a personal Google account is required, which means a work or school Google Workspace account cannot add the Xero app through the consumer Gemini app, and the enterprise route for teams is Gemini Enterprise, where an administrator registers the connection. Google's own Gemini help pages add that work accounts need a qualifying Workspace edition, Gemini Apps Activity switched on and the administrator allowing app connections. On the Xero side, Xero has not announced the Gemini integration as a paid add-on, and its JAX help pages say there is currently no additional charge to Xero subscribers for the JAX chat experience, while stating that Xero reserves the right to change the terms and conditions of using JAX, including the pricing. Check both companies' pages for your own account type, country and language before you plan around it.

Can Gemini issue an invoice or send a payment reminder in my Xero books?

Not without you, and that is the design rather than a gap. Xero says that any operation which modifies financial data, such as issuing an invoice or sending a payment reminder, requires explicit user confirmation in Xero's connected app inside Google Gemini before execution, and that the review step and final judgement stay with the accountant or bookkeeper and the business owner. Xero frames this as Accountable Intelligence: AI handles the heavy lifting and surfaces insights while a human stays at the helm. In practice Gemini can read, summarise, chart and draft, but the write happens in Xero's connected app with you approving it, which is a meaningful difference from an assistant that posts to the ledger and tells you afterwards. The same philosophy governs Xero's own AI: JAX only does something when you open it and ask, Xero's help pages say that users who would rather not use it can simply leave it unopened, access follows existing Xero user roles and permissions, and automatic bank reconciliation is turned on and off per bank account. Whether an approval step is enough for your governance is a separate question from whether it exists, and it exists as a stated control. Compare it with our Intuit Intelligence review, where the platform is default-on and Intuit's own help documentation says there is currently no way to turn AI features off individually.

Which Xero plan do I need for JAX and the Gemini integration?

Two different questions, and Xero answers them differently. For the Gemini connected app, Xero's announcement names no plan requirement and no price, and Google's requirements table states no Xero plan condition either, so the integration is best understood as available to Xero subscribers who can connect it in Gemini, with the tasks capability reserved for eligible plans that Xero has not yet named. For JAX automation, Xero's own product pages do state a plan condition: automatic bank reconciliation powered by JAX requires the Growing plan or above in the United States, and in the United Kingdom the Grow, Comprehensive and Ultimate plans include it, with Simple and Ignite able to add it as a paid AI Automate add-on. JAX chat itself is described by Xero as available to all Xero subscribers and users at no additional charge, with answers limited to what your user permissions already allow you to see. Xero has also stated that it reserves the right to change the terms and conditions of using JAX, including the pricing, so treat the current position as a position rather than a contract. Plan names and prices differ by country, so check xero.com for your own region before you budget.

Did Xero raise its prices in 2026, and was it because of AI?

Yes, Xero raised prices in 2026, and it did so before the Gemini announcement rather than because of it. In the United States the change took effect on 1 October 2026: Early moved from about 25 to about 27 dollars a month, Growing from about 55 to about 59, and Established from about 90 to about 97, which is roughly 7 to 8 per cent, and Xero also removed the multi-organisation discount from that date. Xero billed in US dollars outside the United States is on a second change: Starter moves from about 29 to about 32 dollars a month, Standard from about 50 to about 54 and Premium from about 75 to about 82, effective 1 November 2026, with the multi-organisation discount also removed. The United Kingdom changed on 1 September 2026, with Ignite, Grow, Comprehensive and Ultimate rising to about 18, 39, 55 and 70 pounds a month and Simple unchanged at about 7 pounds. Xero's stated reason is continued investment in the product and a wave of new capabilities that make Xero faster, more insightful and smarter behind the scenes. Xero notified customers in advance, and it has not published a causal link between any specific AI feature and the increase, nor did it announce the Gemini integration as a separate paid add-on. How does Xero with Gemini compare with Intuit Intelligence in QuickBooks?

They are close to opposites on control. Xero with Gemini is read-first and ask-first: JAX only does something when you open it and ask, automatic bank reconciliation is switched on per bank account, and anything that writes to the ledger needs your explicit confirmation in Xero's connected app. Intuit Intelligence is default-on and bundled: eight named agents run inside QuickBooks, and Intuit's own help article states that currently there is not a way to turn off AI features individually, with only the Accounting agent via reverting the bank page and the Payroll agent switchable off. The price stories point the same way. Xero's US increase on 1 October 2026 was about 7 to 8 per cent, and the AI automation sits on Growing and above, while QuickBooks Online Essentials, Plus and Advanced rose about 13, 22 and 24 per cent for renewals on or after 1 August 2026, with Intuit's own product update page tying that change to new AI capability. Neither company publishes an independent accuracy rate, so on that measure the two are identical. Xero's bet protects the customer who wants to choose when AI touches the ledger; Intuit's bet reaches the customer who would never have switched an agent on in the first place. Our Intuit Intelligence review and our Xero review cover both sides in detail.
